Dear Friends of Project Learning Tree, On February 26, 2006 our friend and colleague Barb Pitman succumbed to cancer, after a brief illness. Barb had joined the PLT staff in the fall of 2004 after a long and distinguished career in environmental education. In just these few short months, she put her mark on our programs and added our entire staff and PLT network to her legion of dear friends and admirers. Those of you who worked closely with Barb are well aware of her commitment to PLT and to demanding quality in all she did and we did. Barb was unique. She blended an accountant's eye for precision, for making all the columns add up - with the creativity and passion that drives the best of educators. She began her career as an elementary teacher, detoured through publishing, and later served in leadership roles with many environmental education programs before joining PLT. Above all else, Barb radiated a deep compassion for everyone she encountered. She cared about people, wondering always what she might do to meet their needs and rarely considering her own. Barb is survived by her loving family, her dear friends, and by a vast community of educators who treasure her contribution and mourn her loss. She will be missed.
