Southeastern Forests and Climate Change Activity 3 – Atlas of Change

Students use the online resources, the Climate Change Atlas from the US Forest Service to explain the effects of climate change on the future distribution of suitable habitats for forest types, tree species, and bird species in the southeastern US.

This is one of 13 activities that can be found in PLT’s Southeastern Forests and Climate Change secondary module. To get the activity, “Choose Your Free Curriculum” on your PLT Account homepage. Below are some supporting resources for this activity.

Southeastern Forests and Climate Change Activity 2 – Clearing the Air

Students learn about the scientific evidence supporting climate change, use this information to evaluate and improve conclusions some people might draw about climate change, and participate in a role-play to negotiate solutions. Through this activity, students explore the nature of science and better understand why there are various perspectives about climate changes.

This is one of 13 activities that can be found in PLT’s Southeastern Forests and Climate Change secondary module. To get the activity, “Choose Your Free Curriculum” on your PLT Account homepage. Below are some supporting resources for this activity.

Southeastern Forests and Climate Change Activity 1 – Stepping through Climate Science

The activity provides an overview of the connections between forests and climate. Students create a timeline of climate science over the past 200 years and gather information from U.S. Forest Service video about climate mitigation and adaptation strategies for forests.

Watch this 13-minute video to learn about what the U.S. Forest Service is doing to help our forests as we deal with a changing climate. The video is approximately 13 minutes long; suggested stopping points are at 8:17 and 10:35 for discussion. Alternatively, you may decide to have students watch the video for homework.

Teaching with i-Tree Activity 3 – Land Manager Role Play

Students are challenged to apply what they’ve learned as they role-play being land managers. Students also gain skills in communicating and presenting scientific information. Through this activity, they learn about a variety of land manager and forest-related careers.

This is one of 3 activities that can be found in PLT’s Teaching with i-Tree unit. To get the activity, “Choose Your Free Curriculum” on your PLT Account homepage. Below are some supporting resources for this activity.

Teaching with i-Tree Activity 2 – Tree Value

Students participate in a field study as they identify, measure, and assess the health of trees. They calculate the dollar value and ecosystem services of the trees using the i-Tree Design tool. Students use the information they gathered to create an Ecosystem Services Guide of the study site. They generate a tree improvement action plan and, if feasible, implement part or all of it.

This is one of 3 activities that can be found in PLT’s Teaching with i-Tree unit. To get the activity, “Choose Your Free Curriculum” on your PLT Account homepage. Below are some supporting resources for this activity.

Teaching with i-Tree Activity 1 – Tree Benefits and Identification

Students become aware of the many products we obtain from trees, how we all depend on trees in our daily lives, and the value that trees provide to communities and the environment. They also learn the features of trees that are used in identification and practice identifying trees using guides and free mobile apps. Finally, students are introduced to the i-Tree benefits calculator.

Municipal Solid Waste Activity 1 – Introduction to Municipal Solid Waste: The Waste Stream

This activity helps students to develop an understanding of municipal solid waste management, its importance, and the role it plays in their community. Students will be introduced to their school’s solid waste management system and investigate it by collecting, analyzing, and graphing data.

This is one of 8 activities that can be found in PLT’s Exploring Environmental Issues: Municipal Solid Waste. To get the activity, attend a training and receive PLT’s Municipal Solid Waste secondary module. Below are some supporting resources for this activity.

Municipal Solid Waste Activity 2 – Source Reduction

Student will learn about the importance of source reduction, or of generating less waste in the first place. They will look at household hazardous waste products and ways to reduce the use of toxic products at home.

This is one of 8 activities that can be found in PLT’s Exploring Environmental Issues: Municipal Solid Waste. To get the activity, attend a training and receive PLT’s Municipal Solid Waste secondary module. Below are some supporting resources for this activity.

Municipal Solid Waste Activity 3 – Recycling and Economics

By conducting field research, students will determine the extent of recycled and recyclable products available in their community. They will also consider market forces of supply and demand with respect to recycling.

Municipal Solid Waste Activity 4 – Composting

Students will explore the value of composting as part of a community solid waste management program and learn about the chemical reactions that occur during decomposition. Students will create their own compost containers, collect compostable waste, and create compost.
